The Gillespie County Historic School Organization is hosting an Open House on April 7.
The county was once home to 44 one-room schools from the mid 1800’s through 1949 when the Texas consolidated most into independent school districts. Today, some of the old schools have become private residences, some have been moved to interpretive centers and seventeen remain part of the community where they were built. Each year the Friends of Gillespie County Schools open selected schools for public tour on the first Saturday of April.
This year we will visit five schools we have not previously toured.
We gather at the Love’s Truck Stop in Comfort TX on I-10 and US 87 at 9:30am and begin the run at 10:00am.
From there we will drive about 27 miles of back roads to our first school house.
Typically, we visit with the hosts and use their restrooms for about 20-30 minutes and then move on to the next school.
We will hopscotch some back country roads from school-to-school and end up in Johnson City for lunch around 1:30pm.
Hope to see you there.
