Betty and I look forward to seeing those who signed up to attend our Christmas Party on Saturday, December 15th, at the El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel. The La Habana party room opens at 5:30 pm. Check-in at the door anytime between 5:30 and 7:15 PM, get your place card, and choose a seat. There is open seating except for two tables that are reserved for board and committee members. Enjoy a cocktail and look at the fabulous items available to bid on at our Silent Auction.

5:30 pm – Silent Auction and Cocktail Bar Opens                6:30 to 7:30 pm – Cocktail Hour
7:30 pm – Welcome and Invocation                                       7:35 to 8:45 pm – Dinner Served
8:45 to 9:45 pm – Gift Exchange                                             9:45 to 12:00 pm – Entertainment

Hotel Info: Check-in time is 4:00 pm (see info about parking below). Check-out time on Sunday is 12:00 pm, but those who are going to brunch at Guenther House have until 12:15 PM to check out.

Parking: For those of you spending the night, drive up to the front entrance, go inside and register and you will receive a parking pass. This will allow you to enter the parking lot and pay the overnight discounted rate of $12. You will be guaranteed a slot in the hotel lot if you are staying overnight.

If you are coming for the Christmas party only, proceed around to the parking lot on the side of the hotel. Use a credit or debit card to gain access to the parking lot. Then come inside and check in at the front desk. Say you are with the Bluebonnet Miata Club and they will give you a voucher. At the end of the party when you leave the parking lot, use the voucher first to be scanned and then insert your debit or credit card to be charged the discounted amount of $12.

Parking will be at a premium so come as early as you can. If you arrive too late for parking in the hotel lot, there is parking at the Tobin Center.

Once the lot is full, guests for overnight or event parking will need to find other parking. Link to nearby parking lots is:  CLICK HERE

Since parking is at a premium, we hope you can arrive early, grab one of the Rio magazines or a brochure from the lobby and go see some sights. The Christmas Tree at Alamo Plaza is always fun to see during the day or at night. There are tables in the lobby for those who want to sit and visit. The coffee bar will be open.

Driving Instructions: To get to the El Tropicano, everyone will need to come via Broadway and turn west onto 4th street.  The construction has 4th down to a one way section right in front of the hotel, so you can’t turn onto 4th from St. Mary’s Street.  Going south on Broadway towards downtown you will turn right onto 4th and drive past the Tobin Center on the left.  Cross Ave A and the street goes down to one lane as you get to the entrance drive of the hotel.

After Party: We will announce the details for this during the evening. Those who plan to attend may bring wine and a snack or two to share. There will be coffee available in the party suite. “After Party” will be hosted by Craig and Lisa Martin in their 9th floor suite and patio.

We also look forward to enjoying Christmas Brunch on Sunday, December 16th, 12:30 to 2:30 PM, with those who signed up. The address is 205 E. Guenther Street.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Garden Roof Banquet Room is on the third floor and there is no elevator. If anyone has a concern about this, call Betty at (210) 382-3483 as soon as possible.

Narrated Barge Ride UPDATE:  We attempted to organize a narrated barge ride, but with the predicted weather and other factors we thought it better to not to proceed.  Betty and I walked the route from the hotel to the closest barge departure point and it took over 20 minutes. We also talked to an attendant at the ticket booth and he predicted very long lines for buying tickets and to board the barges on Saturday.  We decided that, given the long walk to and from the barge stop and long lines, there just was not enough time to organize a group and get back in time to check in for dinner by 7:15. If you decide to go on your own, recommend you buy your tickets online to avoid at least one of the waiting lines. Ticket prices are per person (General – $12.00, Local Residents – $10.00, Seniors – $9.00). For more information and to purchase tickets, see the website:

Go Rio River Shuttle Tickets: These barges are not narrated but allow provide opportunities to explore the Riverwalk area (purchase at the website listed above). They run daily from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm and stop at 13 places along the river. Ticket Options per person are: One day unlimited – $12.00, Museum one-day shuttle – $12.00, and the Combination Passes (which include all areas of the Riverwalk area all day) are $16.00.

See you on the beautiful SA Riverwalk!
